Potential for Civil Disturbances – Harare Central Business District

American Citizens should be aware of the potential for civil disturbances today in Harare in general, and specifically in the Central Business District (near the intersection of Julius Nyerere Way and Jason Moyo Avenue), following confrontations this morning between vendors and Municipal Police. There may be additional disturbances between law enforcement and street vendors in the coming days. U.S. citizens are encouraged to avoid this area if possible and use alternate means to the airport, such as the Glenara Road route.

If you should see a disturbance or demonstration, you should immediately leave the area.  If you come upon a demonstration anywhere and must pass, please give the event a very wide berth in order to avoid becoming involved in any way.

U.S. citizens are further encouraged to remain aware of your surroundings and monitor local events.

We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Harare enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at www.Travel.State.Gov.  STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency.  If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

We also recommend that you regularly monitor the State Department’s website, where you can find current Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution.  Read the Country Specific Information for Zimbabwe.  For additional information, refer to the “Traveler’s Checklist” on the State Department’s website.
